Module 5

Group Processing

Overview - Welcome to module 5, Group Processing! In cooperative learning, group processing is one of the most overlooked components. Group processing is a meta-cognitive process that gives groups the opportunity to think about what is working well in their group and what needs to work better (Johnson, Johnson & Holubec, 1993). In this module you will watch a short video, read about group processing using a partner activity and then reflect on your group's ability to work together.

One of the main goals throughout these modules has been to learn about cooperative learning and in doing so, you have also been experiencing cooperative learning. In module 0, your cooperative groups were formed and throughout each, you have been accountable to each other so that all members have a high degree of understanding of cooperative learning. Your roles have changed with each module, also supporting individual and group accountability.

Activities in this Module:

  1. To begin this module, watch the short video below then move onto the partner reading activity. Click the arrow in the video to begin viewing.

  2. Partner reading activity: In this activity, your group will divide into partners to read the material. As you are reading, stop after every few paragraphs and check for understanding. When you have completed the assignment, you and your partner will process how well you both stopped to check for understanding and talked about the material you read. Click here to access the partner reading. When you have finished the activity, access the Discussion Forum and generate three things you and your partner did well or worked well as you worked through the reading. Then address one area in which you could improve.

  3. Post-Test - As the final activity please take the Post- Test.

Summary - Group processing facilitates learning through a reflective process of the group understanding its ability to function as a group with both its strengths and weaknesses.  Johnson, Johnson & Holubec (1993) define group processing as "reflecting on the group's work to clarify and improve the effectiveness of the members in working together to achieve the group's goals" (p 6:3). Group processing also gives momentum for groups to continue working together to achieve.
